🎶 🎶🎶👂Check out FOR YOUR EARS ONLY! Listening to a live concert is an experience that can be as personal as it is communal. In this 4-class interactive course, you will be given a set of skills that will help you get more out of any concert situation. Think of it like adding various filters to enhance certain aspects of the music. @rvasymphony violinists Adrian Pintea and Ellen Cockerham Riccio will guide participants through the process of listening and draw them out on their reactions and impressions.
No assignments will be given outside of class time, but suggested listening lists will be provided for those who would like to strengthen their new skills. All you’ll need is a blank notebook and a good pair of headphones, if you have them!

The Richmond Symphony is pleased to announce that Hae Lee has been selected as the new Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) Conductor, performing three concerts with RSYO each season. His work with the Richmond Symphony School of Music will also include two series of Discovery concerts per season, one in the fall and one in the spring.
This role is in addition to Lee being named Associate Conductor and Jack and Mary Ann Frable Associate Conductor Chair of the Richmond Symphony. Lee will be joining the artistic team beginning in July in preparation for the 2024–25 season and you can meet him at the season finale performances of Verdi’s Requiem on June 1 and June 2.
“I am so excited to be a part of this wonderful Richmond family,” said Hae Lee. “I not only loved the fantastic sound of the orchestra when I visited, but also the warm and welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed working with the talented young musicians of the Youth Orchestra as well. I am looking forward to working with the wonderful Valentina Peleggi and everyone else in this community.”
A Korean conductor, Hae Lee was the 2nd prize winner of the Kussewitzky Conducting Competition and the Finalist of the Besançon Conducting Competition. Lee has worked with conductors around the world, including Finland, Italy, South Korea, France, and Germany as well as throughout the United States. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Conducting from the Korea National University of Arts and he holds his Master of Music from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University.

Meet Camerata Strings! Conducted by Melissa Jones, Orchestra Director at the Collegiate School, Camerata is the intermediate-level string ensemble of the Youth Orchestra Program. In this ensemble, students learn proper rehearsal etiquette, how to make music as an ensemble, and take seating auditions regularly. Students’ skills are challenged with increasingly difficult repertoire and attention to phrasing, bowings, dynamics and articulations.

In 2021, the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra joined a commissioning consortium with the American Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony, and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. We commissioned composer Roberto Sierra to produce a new concerto for electric violin and orchestra for virtuoso soloist Tracy Silverman, who then performed the concerto with each of the commissioning orchestras. Tracy traveled to Richmond to rehearse and perform with our youth orchestra in the spring of 2023.
Ficciones is a four movement work for solo electric violin and orchestra based on stories by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. Sierra’s music is contemporary and explores a variety of genres and effects, making full use of the powerful and eclectic resources available through the use of electric violin.
It was thrilling for us to participate in this project, and exciting for our students to experience a new and different style of music by a living composer, in collaboration with an internationally acclaimed artist. We are proud to release two videos today:
~ Electric Virtuosity, a short documentary about the process of composing, rehearsing, and performing this new music for the first time;
~ Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Spring Concert, May 7, 2023, conducted by Daniel Myssyk with guest soloist Tracy Silverman. This recording includes a full performance of Ficciones as well as Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme featuring 2023 RSYO concerto competition winner Christopher Gilley, and Blumine by Gustav Mahler.

In late January, RSSoM welcomed violinist Keila Wakao to Richmond! Keila was junior first prize winner of the Menuhin Competition in 2021, which was held virtually with the Richmond Symphony as co-host. What a treat to finally host Keila here in person, as she spent her weekend in Richmond performing as part of our Metro Series and visiting members of our community!
A highlight of Keila’s visit was her afternoon at Atlee High School, where she performed for over 150 young orchestra students from across Hanover County, showcasing excerpts from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. She also participated in a Q&A session, answering questions about her career as a violinist and her interests outside of music. What an inspiration!

This season’s cohort for RSSoM’s Future Music Educators Symposium (FMES) is all smiles on Wednesday evenings! In partnership with VCUarts Music—and led by their Director of Music Education, Dr. Sandy Goldie—selected high school juniors and seniors participate in 8 weeks of online workshops and classes where their own hands-on teaching encounters are supported virtually by invited guest speakers, clinicians, and mentors. This year’s cohort of 14 welcomes students from across Virginia and our first-ever out-of-state students from Las Vegas!

In 2021, the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra joined a commissioning consortium with the American Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Meridian Symphony, and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. We commissioned composer Roberto Sierra to produce a new concerto for electric violin and orchestra for virtuoso soloist Tracy Silverman, who then performed the concerto with each of the commissioning orchestras. Tracy traveled to Richmond to rehearse and perform with our youth orchestra in the spring of 2023.
Ficciones is a four movement work for solo electric violin and orchestra based on stories by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges. Sierra’s music is contemporary and explores a variety of genres and effects, making full use of the powerful and eclectic resources available through the use of electric violin.
It was thrilling for us to participate in this project, and exciting for our students to experience a new and different style of music by a living composer, in collaboration with an internationally acclaimed artist. We are proud to release two videos today:
~ Electric Virtuosity, a short documentary about the process of composing, rehearsing, and performing this new music for the first time;
~ Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Spring Concert, May 7, 2023, conducted by Daniel Myssyk with guest soloist Tracy Silverman. This recording includes a full performance of Ficciones as well as Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme featuring 2023 RSYO concerto competition winner Christopher Gilley, and Blumine by Gustav Mahler.

In late January, RSSoM welcomed violinist Keila Wakao to Richmond! Keila was junior first prize winner of the Menuhin Competition in 2021, which was held virtually with the Richmond Symphony as co-host. What a treat to finally host Keila here in person, as she spent her weekend in Richmond performing as part of our Metro Series and visiting members of our community!
A highlight of Keila’s visit was her afternoon at Atlee High School, where she performed for over 150 young orchestra students from across Hanover County, showcasing excerpts from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. She also participated in a Q&A session, answering questions about her career as a violinist and her interests outside of music. What an inspiration!

Congratulations to violinist Hayley Dunn, winner of the 2023–24 RSYO Concerto Competition! Hayley will perform the first movement of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, Allegro non troppo, on RSYO’s May 14 concert. Hayley is a student of @rvasymphony violinist Timothy Judd and is currently a junior at Deep Run High School.
