2024–25 Season Auditions

This Friday, October 11 at 4:00 pm, Youth Community Strings will present their first community performance of the year! Join us at the Children’s Museum of Richmond’s downtown location (2626 West Broad Street) to hear pieces such as Kangaroo in the Pouch, Sleepytime for Baby Gibbons, and more. 🎻 🎉 💫

Admission is required to enter the museum and free parking is available in CMoR’s parking deck. Bring your young future musician and explore the museum with them following the performance. We can’t wait to see you there!

Welcome back to the Richmond Symphony School of Music for our 2024–25 season! A new year of music making kicks off today with the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) and Youth Community Strings. In the coming weeks, we’ll be joined by our remaining four Youth Orchestra Program ensembles, our brand-new Young Composers Seminar, the next cohort of the Future Music Educators Symposium, and more. It’s not too late to join String Sinfonietta, our entry-level strings ensemble! If you’re a beginner-level string musician, Sinfonietta is the ensemble for you! 🎻🎶

Sinfonietta is open to any violinist, violist, cellist, or double bassist who has played their instrument for at least one year. In this ensemble, students learn the basics of playing in an orchestra. They learn about their section within the orchestra, and their role within the section. Students learn to watch and follow a conductor, and how to listen to other sections in the orchestra. Above all, the young musicians in Sinfonietta learn the joy of making music with others.

After six wonderful seasons conducting the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, Mr. Myssyk conducted his final concert with the Youth Orchestra Program on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. During his time with RSYO, Mr. Myssyk conducted 30+ works with over 150 young musicians! We are grateful for his mentorship, sense of humor, and dedication to YOP, which he has worked with since 2018.

Congratulations to all students involved in our spring YOP concerts! 🎉🎶 Our concert on Tuesday, May 14 featured performances by Percussion Ensemble and the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra. This concert highlighted our percussion students from both of our full orchestras and violinist Hayley Dunn, winner of the 2023–24 RSYO Concerto Competition.

We also welcomed our partners from the Greater Richmond Youth Jazz Band to the stage. After the jazz set, RSYO and GRYJB came together onstage for a spirited performance of George Gershwin’s ‘S Wonderful.

In total, almost 200 YOP students performed in our end-of-season concerts–and that doesn’t even include our partners from GRYWE and GRYJB! Kudos to all students involved, and congrats on a memorable 2023–24 season.
