Richmond Symphony Companion Courses Now Free and Open to the Public

Dr. Julie Bemis presents the opening slide for our first Richmond Symphony Companion Course of the year: The Passion of Carmen. Companion Coursesโ€”which are now free and open to the publicโ€”will be released the Monday before the week of each Symphony Series performance, with a total of nine free courses this season.

Take your Richmond Symphony listening experience above and beyond with our Companion Course series, which we are excited to share are now FREE and open to the public! Join Dr. Julie Bemis, Vice President of Education & Community Engagement, for an in-depth exploration of the music featured in the Richmond Symphonyโ€™s 2025โ€“2026 Symphony Series, from The Passion of Carmen this previous weekend to The Planets & Star Wars at the end of the season.

To view each Companion Course, click here. Courses will be available starting at 9:00 am on the Monday the week of each Symphony Series performance, with the course for The Passion of Carmen available starting now and a detailed course schedule available on our website. Happy listening!

Youโ€™re invited! โœ‰๏ธ๐ŸŽถ The Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Richmond Symphony come together in Carpenter Theatre for their first side-by-side performance since February 2020, weaving youth orchestra students together with professional musicians in each section of the orchestra.

The program will include works by Bizet, Mรกrquez, Mascagni, Smetana, and Tchaikovsky and will be conducted by Hae Lee, RSYO conductor and Jack and Mary Ann Frable Associate Conductor Chair.

Fun fact: Today, January 27, is Mozartโ€™s birthday! Also celebrating his birthday today is our very own Hae Lee, conductor of RSYO! Happy birthday, Hae, and thank you for all you do to support our young musicians! ๐ŸŽ‰

Dvoล™รกkโ€™s Symphony No. 8โ€”one of the pieces she played during her very first concert with YOP, which she recently revisited during the Richmond Symphonyโ€™s 2024โ€“25 season. โ€œI have played Dvoล™รกk 8 many times in my career. It is still one of my favorite pieces and there was something special about discovering it for the first time as a young musician.โ€
